These papers appear to have been assembled by Smyth of Nibley, one of whose descendants married into the Owen family of Condover, and thence into the Cholmondeley family of Cheshire. Several concern the Berkeley family with whom he was associated.

John Smyth (1567-1640), from Nibley in Gloucestershire, England, was one of the original promoters of plantations and settlements in the second Virginia colony in North America.
